Of all the nine planets in Vedic astrology, Rahu and Ketu are perhaps the most misunderstood — and the most fascinating. Unlike the other seven planets, they are not physical bodies but rather the two points where the Moon's orbit intersects the Earth's orbital path around the Sun. Known as the lunar nodes or the shadow planets (Chaya Grahas), they represent the deepest karmic currents running through your life.

The Myth Behind Rahu and Ketu

In Hindu mythology, Rahu and Ketu are the severed head and tail of the demon Svarbhanu, who disguised himself among the gods to drink the nectar of immortality. When the Sun and Moon exposed him to Vishnu, his head (Rahu) and tail (Ketu) were severed — but since he had already swallowed the nectar, both parts became immortal. This myth beautifully illustrates their nature: endless craving (Rahu) and the wisdom that comes from letting go (Ketu).

What Rahu Represents

Rahu (North Node) represents worldly desires, ambition, obsession, foreign connections, technology, illusion, and unconventional paths. It shows where you have a powerful, almost insatiable hunger in this lifetime — what you are here to experience and accumulate.

Rahu amplifies whatever it touches, for better or worse. It can bring sudden fame, unexpected opportunities, and rapid material progress. But it can also create confusion, illusion, and a restless dissatisfaction that is never fully quenched through outer achievement alone.

What Ketu Represents

Ketu (South Node) represents past-life karma, spirituality, detachment, liberation, isolation, and mastery already attained. Where Rahu craves, Ketu releases. Where Rahu reaches outward, Ketu turns inward.

Ketu in a house often indicates an area of life where you have deep, innate ability — but also a sense of disinterest or detachment. The gifts are already there; the challenge is to use them consciously.

Rahu and Ketu Always Sit Opposite Each Other

An important feature of Rahu and Ketu in a Kundli: they are always placed exactly 180 degrees apart — in opposing houses. This creates what is called the nodal axis, which is one of the most important themes in your entire life story.

The house containing Rahu shows where you are pushing forward and craving growth this lifetime. The house containing Ketu shows what you have already mastered and are releasing or spiritualising. The tension between these two houses is a central theme of your soul's journey.

Rahu-Ketu Dasha: The 18-Year Nodal Period

In the Vedic Dasha system, Rahu governs an 18-year period and Ketu a 7-year period. The Rahu Dasha is often a time of significant worldly activity, ambition, and sometimes turbulence. The Ketu Dasha is usually more inward, spiritual, and focused on releasing rather than acquiring.
