Few astrological events get as much attention as Mercury retrograde. Emails go missing, contracts fall through, old friends suddenly reappear — people have attributed all manner of confusion to this planetary phase. But what does it actually mean in Vedic astrology, and how should you work with it rather than against it?
From our perspective on Earth, Mercury periodically appears to move backwards in the sky. This optical illusion — caused by the relative speeds of Earth and Mercury in their orbits — is called retrograde motion, or Vakri in Sanskrit. Mercury goes retrograde three to four times per year, each period lasting approximately three weeks.
In Vedic astrology, Mercury (Budha) governs intellect, communication, trade, contracts, technology, and analytical thinking. When it turns retrograde, these areas of life tend to become more complex, prone to mix-ups, and in need of careful review.
Devices malfunction, emails get lost, messages are misunderstood. Double-check everything you send.
This is traditionally not the ideal time to sign important contracts or make major commitments. If you must, read every clause carefully.
Delays, missed bookings, and route changes are more common. Build extra time into travel plans.
Starting major new ventures during retrograde can sometimes lead to needing to redo things. Focus on revising and refining existing work.
People from your past tend to resurface — ex-partners, old friends, former colleagues. These reconnections can be meaningful.
Rather than seeing retrograde as a time to fear, think of it as a period for the prefix "re-" — review, reflect, revise, reconnect, and rest. The energy is inward, contemplative, and retrospective. Use it accordingly.
How strongly Mercury retrograde affects you depends on Mercury's placement in your birth chart — which house it occupies, which sign it is in, and how other planets aspect it. Someone with a strong Mercury in their Kundli may barely notice the retrograde, while another person may find it significantly disruptive.

Chanting ॐ बुं बुधाय नमः on Wednesdays is traditionally recommended. Wearing green, donating green vegetables, or studying something new on Wednesdays are simple practices to strengthen Mercury's positive energy.
